A heads-up to listen closely for some great new songs added to the Boot Liquor lineup this very evening. Several tracks in high rotation from the upcoming album Broken Wings by Arthur Godfrey.
I’ve always considered Arthur’s music one of the cornerstones of Boot Liquor, with his interesting lyrics and distinct voice. This album takes on some serious themes, including homelessness, war and veterans, race-based incarceration inequalities. Even a song dedicated to Charles Bukowski.
I had a last minute opportunity to meet him on his way to the San Jose airport and spoke with him at length about his new CD, as well as some musings on the music industry in general. While some might argue that only a couple of madmen would attempt such an interview with the sounds of jack hammers and motorcycles intruding, the whole ‘blemishes and all’ now seems appropriate.
I’m going to work to cobble together the best bits and construct some sort informal audio podcast. It’ll give you a little more insight as to what makes him tick, the thought he’s put into the record, and how he aspires to “water his own seed”.
Oh, yeah, you can also get an early edition yourself by picking up a copy of Broken Wings at CD Baby.
Boot Liquor is proud to again be one of the sponsors for 10th annual Pickathon Music Festival. Great artists such as Bad Livers,Wayne Hancock, The Gourds, Justin Townes Earle and many many more. The event runs over a 3 day weekend on Aug 1-3 in the Portland, Oregon area. Check out all the details here.
Diamonds to Dust is an excellent CD, and Gurf Morlix has the perfect “weathered” voice to pull it off. While the songs from this CD tend to run a little longer than your typical 3 1/2 minute track, it allows a certain pacing and mood that seems well-suited to his style of storytelling. Listen for “Killin’ Time in Texas“, “Food, Water, Shelter & Love“, “Blanket“, and “Worth Dyin’ For” in the Boot Liquor music rotation. Pick this album up as no-DRM Mp3s from Amazon for a mere $8.99 as well.
Jason Ringenberg has three types of songs, in my inebriated opinion. That would be your novelty tunes, your rockin tunes and your country tunes.
His new CD called ‘Best Tracks and Side Tracks’ has doses of all three, and several great songs have now worked their way onto the Boot Liquor playlist (and therefore our collective hearts).
Listen for songs from this CD including She Hung The Moon, Broken Whiskey Glass, Camile, Buckminster Fuller We Need You and a great cover of John Prine’s Paradise.
Really enjoying this video clip from the Don Was video feed on My Damn Channel. It has Cowboy Jack Clement doing the song”Just a Girl I Used to Know”. Classic.
Arty Hill and the Long Gone Daddys has a new CD out very soon, titled Bar of Gold. Arty is a Boot Liquor favorite, and he was kind enough to share an early mix of the CD (which led to the inclusion of my very own testimonial in the liner notes!).
Songs in the Boot Liquor rotation include the title track (Bar of Gold), A Wreck of a Man, Tore-Up Junction, Don’t Take it Out on Tina, and I Might Have Been a Lawyer (But I Couldn’t Pass The Bar). Great country with the blessing of Boot Liquor and that Jason Ringenberg guy.
Visit Arty’s website for more details…
Today I can’t shake hearing that Wham song, Careless Whisper, running over and over in my head. Or is it George Michael? I guess it’s basically the same.
The most horrific of songs find a way to infiltrate your brain, against your own wishes and futile attempts to block them. “And I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm. Though it’s easy to pretend, I know you’re not a fool”.
Pure evil. I hope I’ve now managed to get it stuck in your head now too, at least temporarily. Misery loves company.

Okay, figured I needed a platform to announce newly added music to Boot Liquor Radio and call attention to shows, music, and CULTURE that may be of collective interest.
Initial thoughts include plugging the excellent new Drive-By Truckers CD and tour, suggesting the movie “Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus“, and perhaps sharing some tips and insights on what kind of music best fits into Boot Liquor “format”.
And, of course, you can find the playback links for Boot Liquor on SomaFM.
